Graphic Terms


Animated gif

Stands for Graphics Interchange Format. A bitmap image format.

JPEG

Commonly used method of lossy compression for photographic images.


Pixel

The smallest discrete component of an image

BMP

An image file format used to stroe bitmap digital images.

FLIP

VIDEO CARD

An expansion card whose function is to generate and output images.

CROP
To, cut off the sides of an image to make it the proper size or to remove unwanted parts

Fps
A measure of how much information is used to store and display motion.





FRAME
A single drawing in a comic strip

MORPH
An animation technique in which one image is gradually turned into another.






 
CPU
(Central Processing Unit) The CPU is the brains of the computer.




DPI
(Dots per inch) Indication of the resolution of images. The more dots per inch, the higher the resolution.







RESOLUTION
The sharpness and clarity on an image. The term is most often used to describe monitors, printers and bit-mapped graphic images.









FILE EXTENSION
Suffix to the name of the computer file applied to indicate the encoding the convention (file format) of its contents.








  
COMPRESSION
Enables devices to transmit of store the same amount or data in fewer bits.

 FRAME BUFFER
The portion of memory reserved for holding the complete bit-mapped image that is sent to the monitor.




 COLOUR DEPTH
The number of distinct colours that can be represented by a piece of hardware or software.
